Odysseas Elytis Theatre

Odysseas Elytis was a well-known Greek Nobelist poet who composed contemporary poetry. The Odysseas Elytis Amphitheatre, named for the poet himself, is located at the summit of Chora Hill on Ios, behind the whitewashed windmills.

Despite being made of marble in the ancient Greek style, the amphitheater was built relatively recently in comparison to other architectural wonders of Ios. It is a massive edifice that can accommodate up to 1100 people at any given moment. Most of the island’s cultural events are hosted here each year, with the grandest celebrations being the Homeria festival, which honors Homer, one of the greatest poets of all time.
